Small Business-The Next Big Thing-Politicians Take Heed

Ok,  so I did one of those things driven more by the checkbook than by what you need in the longterm.  In an effort not to pay two mortgages and a lease on an office space, I moved my small business into my rental.  My neighbors complained for what reason, I have no idea.  (What an exemplary neighbor Rainmakers would be…when we’re improving the grounds daily and we’re never there at night).
Anyway, the city of Indianapolis, in their great wisdom chose to cite me for various violations. What I find extremely ironic about the whole thing is that four days before this, I have a prominent area politician speak (for way to long), at an event we organized  about how his city “Carmel” was working with the private sector in synergy to better the community.

Granted he wasn’t from Indy and doesn’t deserve the crap for this but, I feel as a nation, a state, and a city, we need to take a closer look at this.  Here is someone continuing to pay taxes on two homes, to make lease hold improvements, to employ four people with good jobs and benefits and yet we penalize them because they use a building and property in means that was determined to not fit, over 20 years ago.

Constraints are being created based on precedence rather situational management.  Here is Rainmakers minding it’s own business trying to mind our wares and continue to incubate into a world-class business and employer,  yet we get one of those hurdles you and I face all day long as a smaller small business.

We have a game changing problem that forces us to pull up roots literally and start over.  Now,  I am not complaining that all the people in the prospect jobs didn’t do exactly what they were supposed to do.

What I am complaining about is more global and short sighted…about governments stance to small business.  It breaks down into three simple things:  Here is what I think you can do if you really want to help!

1.  If you are about small business , know what small business is.  2010 will mark the largest increase in homebased businesses in the history of this country.  If you don’t have a strategy to help small businesses at home then you aren’t helping small businesses.  I call them  OEO’s…Only Executive Officers..  It is these people building the next 4, 20, and 250 people companies, they have to start somewhere and where they usually begin is their garage, dorm rooms etc.  See the HP or Google story for confirmation.

2.  Know what we face day-to-day.  Small business is a hand to hand, month to month, manic depressive experience that is lived on a treadmill going 2 miles an hour faster than you can run on a good day.  If you want to help,  we need counselors, short-term loads,  yeah,  like 30, 60 and 90 days,  we need office space and employees we can rent buy the hour.

3.  Help us sell.  If not sell us , then just buy from us,  then help us market our wares to the entire world.  The truth about Indianapolis IN, is there is a small business that can fix about any problem that not only the local government may have, but the larger companies in this city may have as well.  One small problem!  Most small businesses can not survive the sales cycle or courting process to create any of these relationships.  So you get a natural barrier to entry that does not need to be there.

Yes,  these are simple things, things that might not seem big enough for the average politician,  not big enough to stick your name on, or represent enough votes to spend the time.

Oh,  but let caution you Mr and Mrs Politician, for I know my entrepreneurs, and they have memory like an elephant.  If you ignore this call to put your name on another moving of a world headquarters or a new development of 130 stores, you will be left behind by the OEO who is three steps away from breaking through to becoming the next Google or HP.

We do vote w/ our dollars and we vote too!

  1. What I would like to add to this Tony, is that I was born as an explorer and a conqueror – an entrepreneur. This means I don’t like other people to do my hunting, I am the champion of my cause. As a penalty for this open minded, ingenuity that we entrepreneurs have, we are subjected to supressing our success with “policy”. We are not allowed to decide if we can work from home freely, we are robbed of the freedom to decide what best takes care of our families and makes our endeavors most successful, and how to enjoy those benefits when they pay off. I am not limiting this to taxes and zoning but these are certainly relevant. The worst mistake politicians have made is not realizing that you can never prevail when you stifle ingenuity. One who has ingenuity is one who has success as part of their DNA, Ingenuity IS SUCCESS in character form. The person with ingenuity always finds another way to succeed no matter what.
